To Grandpa

This Ayuli. I am really going to miss you. You always spoiled me when you came to visit in Senegal and you made me laugh with your jokes. Also my dad was always so happy when you were around.

My dearest dad....you instilled in me the confidence to be who I am today, by always telling me how great I could be even when the evidence was not always obvious. It never ceases to amaze me how many people you were able to help along the way.

My biggest gratitude to you will always be the fact that you were ready to make such big sacrifices so we could have a better life.

I thank you, will always love you and will always feel you at my side.

Our Daddy, our hero, our protector, our supporter!

From the first faltering steps you were there to nurture, protect and guide
As teenagers you proffered advice, set the boundaries, values and ethics
When things went pear-shaped you were there to pick us up
And when the nay sayers doubted us you injected us with much needed positivity and confidence
For that we will be eternally grateful because it made us the people that we are today

You have lead your life by example
Always giving, advising and supporting
Even when the decisions were unpopular you admonished with wisdom and love
In ill health you remained positive even stoic; never a broken man
And in death you departed peacefully without any fuss.

We applaud you for a life well spent
Your beautiful legacy will live on through your family and others whose lives you touched
You gave us something precious – dignity, integrity, a sense of purpose and much more
And deserve the befitting and honorable send-off which we promise to give you
We will always love you to the moon and back

At eighty-eight, we knew you would not be with us forever
You were a fantastic Dad – one in a million
So we will celebrate your life as you would have wished
But will miss you with all our heart
Rest in peace perfect with the angels, Daddy
